The Sideshow

You are in downtown Dayton. You enter the ground floor of a gigantic multi-level warehouse. Begin your journey in the main gallery to view sculpture and 2D art while live music plays. Weave your way through large-scale environmental installations and be enveloped by each artist's view of the world. Stop at the main stage to enjoy a vaudville act, watch a play, or be intrigued by performance art. Enter the screening room to sample video art. Mingle with performers in the crowd.

Guests will be bombarded with spectacle, sound, and vision. One evening buzzing with interaction, performance, visual stimuli, music, food, and drink.

The Dayton Circus Creative Collective will present its annual multimedia extravaganza, Sideshow 8, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, May 10, and 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday, May 12. The event will be held at the Circus’ home, the Yellow Cab building, 700 E. Fourth Street. Sideshow 8 is an arts experience featuring work by more than 50 artists and more than 20 bands and performers. Focused on local participants, The Sideshow is a celebration of the art and culture found in the Dayton region. Admission is free, but donations will support the Circus. Food and refreshment will be available on site.

The 2nd annual Dayton Crafty-Con will be held April 5, 2013 from 5pm to 11pm at the Yellow Cab Building, 700 E. 4th St, Dayton, OH 45402.
Crafty-Con will feature many craft vendors that will demonstrate their craft while vending, and will also include our first Battle of the Crafters! Teams will face off against each other in a timed crafty battle, with winners going on to the next round! There will be prizes for the first and second place teams!

Models needed in Dayton area

In need of talent for photo work and some video clips that will be used on various websites.
These are paying gigs and if all goes well there will be more and more opportunities as things grow. You won't get rich on these jobs, but you will be paid and you will add to your portfolio of work.
When I say character is welcome, it means just that. Models outside of mainstream media will be considered and welcomed.
These jobs are commercial and do NOT involve nudity. Transportation in the greater Dayton area may be made available as needed.

Hard to believe it is this time already, but Sideshow 6 is here... once again it will be an Event of Grand Proportions! 35+ Artists, 25 Bands and Performers! Two Days! Two Venues! Two Stages! and who knows what else!

This year's Sideshow will be held at Garden Station (at the corner of 4th and Wayne) and in the Yellow Cab building across the street (700 E. 4th St) - which following the Sideshow will become the new home for the Dayton Circus. The Sideshow runs from 5pm - 1am on Friday, May 13th and Saturday, May 14th.

So I was unable to make it to the last meeting I have been Swamped with work and all sorts of things that make me smile everyday.
Actually I am unable to make it meeting from now on due to having shoots booked just about every Weekend.

Here is what I need to make this years found art happen

Say 30 For Flyers ( Or If I can E-mail the flyer to someone who is willing to print them at the space then we can do that)

and I need 75 for sound.... We are using C{Space house sound since there are full bands playing.

Critisism

Matt sugested that if I have something else to say about the circus space, and not being let in, I say it here in a personal blog instead of about a blog that is about a monthly meeting. I didn't bring it up because I want to be angry or right. I think that is an example of how the circus operates exclusively sometimes. I think it could have been handled better. I think at the least a vote should have been taken or a meeting should have been held where I was invited or I should have been contacted about it. It shouldn't have been handled sneaky the way it was.

So I am currently looking into buildings and have tons of idea's running threw my head I know that this year I want friday to be more about the art and performance and saturday to be the bigger night for music performances....

I am really wanting find a building by December or January at the latest. The sooner we can get a feel for the space the better.....

I am pretty sick right now so I am focusing on getting healthy mostly and so the biggest clincher is getting some meds for my asthma so once thats out of the way I will be full speed ahead....

Fires in the Valley-- Things We Still Need

Hey everybody!

For those of you who've been in and out of the space since we started this whole rehearsal and building process, you've see, I hope, that lots of people have put lots of hard work into it. I'm grateful to each one and acknowledge that between now (it's around 10 AM) and the top of the show (at 5 tomorrow night,) the craziness will continue. We've got most of our bases ccovered in terms of personnel, but there are a few holes. They are as follows:

Oregon Arts District - OSU / USC Game on a 9-Ft jumbtron! Immediately following the Street Fair!

The Oregon Arts District will be hosting the OSU / USC game on a 9-ft jumbotron on Saturday evening, Sept 12. (This immediately follows Oregon's Street Fair that is on that same day from 10am until 6pm.) The game will be shown on the jumbotron that will be located in the parking lots right behind Ned Pepper's / Ohio EPA / Global Gauge. These lots will be roped off the entire day/night for the day's events. There is no entry charge for either event...just come and enjoy!

Urban nights is. . . ahem. . . two days away. no, this is not the message where I freak out. I am, but only a little. Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Tell your parents and tell your children: the Garden's having two bands, a stage show, and a (hopefully) batshit crazy bonfire after polite society drifts off into the darkness. Marketing position.

I think we should have a designated person withint he membership (possibly as a year-long board position) dedicated solely to marketing our events. Case in point: the FOund Art Show at c}space was yet another artistic success and, for all I could see, at best a break-even event financially. Once again: the parking lot behind the space was packed and once again, our building had, at most, sixty people in it at any given time . Kidtee did everything within her power to let folks know the event was happening. Why don't we have one person for press releases, flyer distro, etc?

Fire

So we're putting the show together, and it's coming along pretty well. The torches will be there. Meestah Kenworthy and I will have the atages in place, the rehearsals are going well, and I'm calling back musicians to fill up te rest of the night.

There's one problem:

Soul Fire Tribe-- who'd agreed to work with us that night-- was already booked. Without fire dance, the whole theme of the night loses a great deal. Does anyone know other poi and fire folk aorund town? I'm making rounds upon rounds of calls and emails tomorrow as soon as I get up.

Oregon Arts District Street Fair

The Oregon Arts District Street Fair is being held on Saturday, September 12 (the day after Urban Nights). We are looking for vendors (art, food, collectibles, 'stuff', etc) for the event. We are looking for additional entertainment as well.

If you or someone you know may be interested in getting a 10x10 space, please let me know asap. Also, we welcome non-profits as well and have significantly reduced costs for them to encourage their community good will!

First things first: you can't schedule an Urban NIghts on September 11th without someone commenting on the significance of the date. The city planners are either totally oblivious or would assume that a community of artists will ignore it. either way, they're wrong :-)

Community Art Project

The community art project at Cspace for Urban nights turned out amazing. If you haven't seen it, you should really check out what these kids did!

I'd like to host a circus/garden station community art project.

For those of you who don't know. I provide a huge blank canvas, and start a piece of art. I provide materials and encourage people to bring their own. I spend most of my time trying to encourage experimentation in different ways while people of all ages work on the canvas.

Really Really Free Market Awesome!

Despite that fact I was up for 40-some hours at the point, and Maggie and I were still kicking people out of Sideshow at the break'a'freak'n dawn, the Really Really Free Market was AWESOME! GO Jenn!

The event made the paper twice and the pictures are sweet! You might be in them!!!

I was overwhelmed with feelings yesterday as I looked around at all the kindness, love, and sharing while remembering all of the hard work and contributions we have all made to have that garden in the first place.

I love that we are all artists or artistic using our talent for good!

I know the stuff is cheap, but...I am trying to use all recycled, found, or donated materials. (I feel strongly that we don't have to consume to produce.)

It's been a source of inspiration for me, and there's certainly been a lot of creation there - now it's time for some Recreation!

So my large wood scultpures I have been talking about are not only things to engage your body in movement but they are also instruments. They all make different sounds but require the entire body to make them work. I'd like to have some get togethers before the sideshow in the garden where people can come make their own homemade instruments that they can use in conjunction with me pieces at the sideshow. Would anyone be into something like this?

Button Maker Instructions

I am cleaning and I realized I still have the instructions and template. I forgot to put them in the box. I need to return them.

I downloaded a template from the internet and made my button that way by printing out many templates all at one time. I forgot to bring the circus ones to the burrito jam last time. I will print out a whole bunch of them though and put them in the box with the instructions. This way whenever anyone has free time they will be there for people to cut and make.

should I return this thursday? Let me know who I need to give it to and when.

my thoughts on the current issues

I been with the circus and the sideshow since it started.....
I remember me, laurana, and Mike Officer being there just about everyday working......... trying to trust in laurana's vision and man I am glad I did.... to me allot of the issues with attendence and trust and things like that are more a question....
do I trust the other members... well yes I do but the may not have the same opinion as I do..... so here is what I think....
What is the real issue..... attendance not quarum.... people don't want to come out anymore we have in many ways lost site of what our goals are...........

Thinking out side our own creative box.....

So on a gut feeling I called about a space..... its located at 110 E 3rd st.....

I looked in and Wow what a great feeling so... I called the number on the poster in the window....I have never done this and I was so nervous.... I don't deal with these kinds of things well.... I felt bubbles in my stomach..... I know in my head we need a downtown pressence.... we need a space that is our and a place where we can grow....

We just got a place at front st I know this.... and this is where I ask to keep an open mind.....

Joel and I moved the leftover sculptures to the Circus garden today. We also moved the wood from Kidtee's installation there to get it away from The Merc. I returned the keys, and Mark has taken the responsibility of placing the last piece of the puzzle: resecuring the side door since it incurred some damage while we were inhabited the building.

There are two large sculptures that got left at The Sideshow. Right now, they're sitting in front of The Merc. If you know who they belong to, please notify the artist(s) immediately. I may try to take them over to the garden space today if I can get some help... We also left some nice wood outside The Merc next to the sculptures. If you want to dismantle the structure to scavenge the wood, feel free. I wanna get this all wrapped up ASAP.

Sideshow Teardown?

I was just wondering what help was still needed in tearing down the space. I believe Tiffany told me that we had a week after the show to move everything out (does that include the stage?). Remember to pitch in and help take things apart - not as glamourous as putting things up but just as important. Have the cans been taken for recycling? Let me know how I can help...

I know we bought a lot of beer (more than 1000 cans I think...) - I've got one cooler that I will bring but it will only hold 40 or so cans... I think we are picking up the beer around 3 on friday, so as many coolers as we could have there by then would be good I think...

merc times

i may have missed a post but how late will the merc be open tonight and tomorrow night for completing our work/space?

Water in the Sideshow space...

on the floor that is... If anyone wants a rough idea of where water runs through the space, Lisa was nice enough to outline the large puddles with chalk last night. If you need help picking them out let me know. Hopefully the rain we got over the last couple of days will be the last before the Sideshow, but I know they are predicting some for Sunday. Or you might stop by today, I bet a lot of the water is still there - if this will be an issue for your installation/artwork you might check it out.

PA practice in the Merc Wednesday evening

We will have the PA up and running in the Merc wednesday evening during Burrito Jam - if you are interested in learning more about it to help run sound during the Sideshow, or if you are interested in playing through it to hear how you will sound night of the show please come - bring whatever you play so we can practice mic'ing and other pa things - I hope to have it up and running by 7pm. Even if you are not interested directly in the PA come anyway, there will be plenty of other things to do!

Terry Morris, an Arts reporter for the Dayton Daily News and a supporter of The Circus, is interested in covering The Sideshow 3. He gave us that two-page spread and the cover of Go for last year's Sideshow. This from him:

"In advance of the next Urban Nights, I'm hoping to find out a little more about the Sideshow and get a photograph of two. If it's impossible to shoot anything in advance, we could get the members of the Circus, or at least those planning to perform, in some Circus-like shot. We coulde do that outdoors even. Something that says "Circus"?"

Restricted Areas of The Merc

We've signed the Merc lease agreement, and there is a very important clause in it it that I want to make sure everyone knows about:

"Areas that are strictly off limits include all upper floors of Lotz as well as rear portion of the ground floor identified with yellow caution tape and the basement. Also restricted is the rear boiler room of the DPL building. Violation of these restrictions without the expressed consent of E3 can be cause for termination of this agreement and the forfeiture of any paid fees by Circus."

Water in the Sideshow space

Just a quick note to let people know, I made an exploratory venture to the roof in the space and I don't think we are going to be able to easily fix the water leaks. The rubber covering on the roof is shot and the whole roof slopes toward the inside wall. The two drains I saw up there had large plants growing out of them and were probably clogged. What this means is that when it rains, water flows to the inside wall and under the rubber roof and sits there until it drains... There is a large puddle just to the north east of the hole in the ceiling...

Hello Everyone. So I will be signing the lease for the Merc building on Mon. morning. I should have the keys and be able to let us in to clean up after that. I saw "Zeitgeist" last night at Front St. (hosted by Andy D and Katie A) and I can't get it out of my head.

I went and did a rough estimate of how many people are listed in the white pages today - 181 thousand. I want to distribute information and possibly copies of this film to as many people as I can.

I've thought of just mailing out 100 copies at a time to one specific last name - or just dropping mail off to an entire neighborhood.

DAYTON — The owners of the city's largest nightclub want out.

They claim the city's objection to renewal of a liquor permit for The Foundry is hurting their ability to find a buyer for the business at 26 Wyandot Street.

"We've had our fill in running a night club and we want to sell," said Jon Neidert, who owns the club with Paul Ireton. "Nobody is going to buy it if they don't know if there is a future in it."

George Hubler

George Hubler 1922-2007

George Hubler died late Friday night after he left the Sideshow. His son told me that he went peacefully.

It was great to have gotten to know him putting on this show. George was a very remarkable man who has lived an exciting long life. I feel fortunate to have shared experiences with him.

Hey all,

My theater company (Encore Theater Co.) performs monthly at Gregory's Piano Bar, across the street from the Victoria Theatre. We perform 'cabaret' style. Typically this includes 6 singers and pianist....often singing from Broadway shows, but not always.

Safety (make sure no one under 21 drinks and that no one goes outside with alchol, make sure that peolple don't touch non-interactive artwork, report larger problems to heads of safety -
we will review the basics, it's not as complicated as it sounds.

Postering

Heather asked me to put up posters in the Oregon Dist...however I went to Yellow Springs first and put the smaller posters up on the bulletin boards there. I've been sick at home ever since, so I haven't made it to poster the OD. Can someone else take care of these, puleaz? Thanks.

Do you have old toys that I could have?

I need three items to complete my performance installation for The Sideshow. I'm looking for a G.I. Joe doll or a Ken doll. Preferably a G.I. Joe because he's bigger. (Heh heh. Size does matter.) Any male doll would do, really. I also need a large toy car. Ideally a Barbie sportscar. I also need a toy house. Maybe twelve by twelve inches square. I'll probably alter all of the items, so it'd be stuff you are getting rid of. Do you have any of the above items for my use?

This is Casiedy again with Art Attak. I have attached a few photos of the venue, and got the stage dimensions like you asked. The opera stage is 40 feet by 40 feet, and the upstairs stage is 25 feet by 20 feet. The wall space is large, and the opera section holds around 1000 people, and the upstairs holds about 300 people!!!

Dayton Art

As you all probably know, the Dayton school system took a huge blow recently and will probably, in my mind, never recover. My friend, Cathy Jeffers, taught art for Dayton Public for the last 4 years. During that time, she told me horror stories of teachers abusing teachers, students abusing students and students abusing teachers. She has been hit, threatened and flashed by an unknown man. I could never do it. One week would be enough to send me running out of that place, never to return. She kept going.

We are now taking applications for the 2nd annual Sideshow!!

The Sideshow will be September 14th & 15th.

Friday the 14th will be held in conjunction with Dayton’s Urban Nights and Saturday the 15th is we’ll continue to blow Dayton away the way, Circus style!

Last year’s event was incredible, let’s make this year's even more mind-blowing!!

Hey everyone, it's movie night again at my uncle David's house, and everyone's invited! We're goig to be watching Temple of Doom, the second in the Iniana Jones Trilogy, on the big screen in his basement (THX anyone?)...

The movie usually starts around 9:30ish, and there's Xbox 360, hot tubbing, Chips & Dip etc. starting at 8:00.

Just bring your swimsuit! (towels provided)
