How to use The Circus Website

For people new to The Circus website, this site is still in "beta" phase - not everything works perfectly, and rather than work out all the kinks, our webmaster Mark Jeffers has been working on going straight to version 2.0 - a major update that promises to take us to another level - this is a major undertaking by his company, and it's over a year in the making. We're all looking forward to it!

Building on the success of January's potluck where we showed the classic Carnival of Souls, we will once again screen another perfect movie on the last friday of February. We haven't decided which movie yet, but there are plenty of great ones to choose from and it might possibly end up being a double feature.

Free Music First Friday with The Hiders and Tim Pritchard

Free Music First Friday with The Hiders and Tim Pritchard

Another great night of music, featuring The Hiders- straight from the Bat Cave along with Tim Pritchard (of Floods and many other wonderful bands). This will be the Hider's first appearance in Dayton in more than 2 years. How to describe their music? Psychedelic Country? Great American Rock and Roll - best just to poke around their site at www.thehiders.com and decide for yourself. I do know this for sure, you'll have a wonderful time if you come.

Monthly Circus Business Meeting

07/16/2011 - 13:00
07/16/2011 - 15:00

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let you know that this month's business meeting will be held Saturday July 16th at the Yellow Cab building at 700 E. 4th Street. Plenty of things on the agenda including Lily's Skate show, our continuing development of policy for the Yellow Cab building, discussing our facebook presence, along with this month's successes! A bunch more will probably be added - so make certain you come and learn what the Circus is up to and add your input!

Models needed in Dayton area

In need of talent for photo work and some video clips that will be used on various websites.
These are paying gigs and if all goes well there will be more and more opportunities as things grow. You won't get rich on these jobs, but you will be paid and you will add to your portfolio of work.
When I say character is welcome, it means just that. Models outside of mainstream media will be considered and welcomed.
These jobs are commercial and do NOT involve nudity. Transportation in the greater Dayton area may be made available as needed.

How do we update front page?

Says we're still at Front St, etc.

RSVP to Yvette Kelly-Fields at yvette.kelly-fields@updayton.com.

THE EASEL@GardenStation ~ 2011

03/07/2011 - 13:11

As THE EASEL is nearing its forth warm seasons at Garden Station I am happy to report that it did survive its third winter quite well thank you. Still I feel the structure is due: (1) a paint-job (2) a minor wood overhaul (3) a slight modernization. ~ 1. the color I have selected is called: "International Orange" and is known by most of our citizens as the color of the "Golden Gate Bridge" in San Francisco CA. ~ 2. some of the wood panels are in need of replacement and a new stain veneer the color of which will be determined after the aforementioned paint job. ~ 3.

Time again for our monthly business meeting - I was going to suggest that we have it at Garden Station if the weather is warm enough, or we could go across the street and have it in the Yellow Cab building and walk through it again or we could have it at Hope Church and get filled in on the progress of the screen print studio

Garden Station Sunday Market and Harvest Festival!

10/03/2010 - 12:00
10/03/2010 - 15:00

Sunday, October 3rd will be a special day at Garden Station. It’s true that local art and produce are not something new to find here. The space at 4th Street and Wayne Avenue is already home to 13 “urban farmers” throughout the growing season and everywhere you look there are different works of art. There are colorful murals that adorn the 600′ of wall space, sculptures dotted throughout the two acre lot, and whimsical touches such as the wooden man and the toilet planter and even the garden shed itself with its colorful bottle wall.

Found Artshow

So I was unable to make it to the last meeting I have been Swamped with work and all sorts of things that make me smile everyday.
Actually I am unable to make it meeting from now on due to having shoots booked just about every Weekend.

Here is what I need to make this years found art happen

Say 30 For Flyers ( Or If I can E-mail the flyer to someone who is willing to print them at the space then we can do that)

and I need 75 for sound.... We are using C{Space house sound since there are full bands playing.

So Total $105 C{Space is Handling Bar and not charging me a rental Fee

Another 2 Spammers

Another 2 spammers hit the site today. 42 spams have been deleted. Manny, I think you said you had a friend willing to put together a new site for us? I'm all for that.

Manny is Awesome

Manny has blessed us with a functional warranty for our printer! This was quite the adventure - he valiantly strode into the dungeon of HP warranty refusal, and after many Kafka-esque encounters with beauracratic trolls and receipt-denying dragons, he rolled a proverbal 20 and emerged victorious to save us more than $400 in repair fees!

Way to go, dude.

Scene + Genius = Scenius

Kevin Kelley writes about the confluence of factors that come into play to create a positive, self-reinforcing and self-perpetuating scene of high creativity and innovation. From his website:

The geography of scenius is nurtured by several factors:

• Mutual appreciation -- Risky moves are applauded by the group, subtlety is appreciated, and friendly competition goads the shy. Scenius can be thought of as the best of peer pressure.

Hope Studio closed this Saturday 3-8PM

Circus Roles

So that I'm not sounding like a broken record at meetings, I'm compiling a list of all the roles that need to be filled in order to make the Circus function:

1) Spokesperson: Ideally our Chairperson. Contact person for anyone interested in the Circus, be they potential members or journalists.
2) Treasurer: keeps an accurate accounting of our treasury, writes checks. (Mark Jeffers, 2006-present).

Halfway to Sideshow?

I'm going to Forecastle Festival this weekend and was just reading on Wikipedia that they have a "Halfway to Forecastle" event 6 months before. Maybe it would be good to hold a "Halfway to Sideshow" benefit in November?

Communications/Mission meeting notes: What is the Circus? 3 goals for 2010

Today we held a meeting for anyone interested in revisiting the Circus' purpose and communicating it to others. We spent the meeting writing & sharing answers to two questions: 1) What is the Circus? 2) What are 3-5 goals you'd like the Circus to accomplish in 2010? Below are responses from Manny's & my notes. I think the next step is for a very small group of strong writers meet to draft some language to be used for the brochure/website/presentation and then present back. Feel free to leave comments. What do they all have in common? What are the conflicting sentiments?

I tried to login to our old gmail and couldn't get in. Maybe I've forgotten the login, but I don't think so? Could someone who had access message me privately with the info? I'd like us to start using the email list again.

Hey everybody, come check out Paige Does Dayton and c wright's Parlour Tricks, Friday June 4 at Garden Station at the corner of 4th St. and Wayne. These are some of Dayton's hottest performers and guaranteed good time. It's also a fine time to see all the new construction at Garden Station - new beds, a new pop bottle greenhouse, and much more. But wait, if that is not enough to make you want to come out, there is also a Zombie Walk scheduled to take place in the Oregon District at 11pm - it's a food drive, so make sure you bring a can good with you to share.

Hey guys. A couple of months ago I got a call from my friend Bill Pote saying that his friend owned a downtown building and he was tired of seeing the storefront empty, so maybe I would help by organizing some art for the windows.
It came together just in time for Urban Nights, and is meant as a pilot project to spread throughout town if there's interest. Thanks to those of you who participated.
Go check it out! NE corner of 2nd & Jefferson (the old Boston's), just a half block north of c{space.

Hi Kate!
I'm writing an article for the Dayton City Paper on the Sideshow and, instead of just doing the boring nuts and bolts kind of story about "when and where," I thought it would be good to have a tory about what the Sidehow means to members of the Circus as well as the community. I tried to post something up in the forum, but it keeps asking me to pick a forum, but the drop down menu doesn't have any selections. I dunno...

Sideshow needs Circus info table & staff

Hey all...I've got it on my volunteer needs list that there will be a Circus info table, staffed by Circus members. Is anyone willing to set it up and/or staff it? Here's your chance to be an ambassador for the Circus!

PURPLE MARTINS! (maybe)

04/05/2010 - 12:00

I installed two gourds at Garden Station for Purple Martins to nest in (hopefully). An interesting fact of this most favored bird is that the Male helps out in it's domestic engineering duties.

Any takers?

From Kristen Wicker:
The new funding idea mentioned below is really interesting: http://www.kickstarter.com/. Artists and others post projects and individuals can fund them … but every project has to reach 100 percent funding before any money will change hands. Click on the FAQ at the top right of the home page for details on how it works.

Studio Cleanup

03/13/2010 - 11:00
03/13/2010 - 14:00

Pedro has ask Circus members to help out and volunteer cleaning up our studio space. There will be a professional contractor drywaller working on the space right after we have gotten rid of the debris. This will start @ 11am and pedro will provide free pizza and drink afterwards. It would be great to have atleast 2 -5 people.

Critisism

Matt sugested that if I have something else to say about the circus space, and not being let in, I say it here in a personal blog instead of about a blog that is about a monthly meeting. I didn't bring it up because I want to be angry or right. I think that is an example of how the circus operates exclusively sometimes. I think it could have been handled better. I think at the least a vote should have been taken or a meeting should have been held where I was invited or I should have been contacted about it. It shouldn't have been handled sneaky the way it was.

Want a silkscreening shop to use? Come help set it up!

02/27/2010 - 12:00

Thought I'd post this...Matt, can you confirm...are you willing to be the point person for this?

Hope Arts Center has had silkscreening equipment donated and will be dedicating a room in the basement for it. We are welcome to use it if we help set it up...so they're hoping we'll have a number of volunteers there.

Sideshow Benefit- Future Themed Ball at c{space

04/03/2010 - 20:11
04/03/2010 - 23:59

Repost for Jim Tarjeft, who is coordinating
_____________________________
yesterday I volunteered to throw a private event at C{space which would be a fundraiser for this years sideshow.

I've chosen to try and throw a future themed dance. the way I am intending to run it is a little bit different though. I am the point person.

1. everyone who comes will pay $10, this should raise $900 for the circus, we will have a donation jar too. that's assuming that C{space would like $100 for the night. that hasn't been finalized yet.

Cleaning up Facebook

So we currently have GROUP pages for The Circus and Sideshow V.
I feel like there are a lot of news items that would be more appropriate in a news feed than a message sent to inboxes, which can only be done on fan pages. I'm thinking maybe we should attempt to replace the Circus group page with a fan page and encourage both Circus/Sideshow group members to join that as well. Then we can post updates for Sideshow, Garden Station, and anything else to people's newsfeeds. Sideshow V can remain a group.

How does that sound?

Zine - looking for a new place to house the printer/computer/scanner. c{space was seen as temporary to begin with, and it's looking like it needs to be more temporary than first anticipated. The deadline for getting it out of c{space is Feb 17th. If nothing comes up I'm just going to rent storage space, but I'd rather only move the Printer on more time... it's a bit of a chore!

Proposal - Ten Principles for The Sideshow

Please read the following and leave your thoughts in the comments. This is a proposal for the adoption of principles which would guide the participants of The Sideshow. It is adopted and modified from similar principles used at participatory art events around the world, including the Burning Man festival in Black Rock City, Nevada. While already doing most of these things actively, it answers some of the questions we get as to why we do what we do.

Sideshow Planning Meeting

02/22/2010 - 19:00
02/22/2010 - 20:00

About a dozen people met at the OE on Monday to make the first decisions about SIDESHOW V, to be held May 14-15 (the weekend of Urban Nights) at the Armory Building on 6th Street in the Oregon District. For those who've never been, the Sideshow is a giant yearly multimedia arts festival showcasing the ideas and creativity of the Dayton community. We're excited that this less-raw location will allow us to focus less on things like electricity and toilets, and more on creating an awe-inspiring experience.

frustration part II

01/28/2010 - 10:42

. at the original date of your post (June 22, 2007), GardenStation was not yet a formal project. I truly do feel 'ya girl; it can be frustrating to have plans grander than ourselves; only to find poor, poor me, left all alone with (I felt) a good idea.

But then, here comes The Really Really Really Free Market which is a concept of more than marginal utility.

I know & I know folks really do appreciate the RRRFM and the event will become a forum should you choose to carry on my wayward friend.

Here's an idea everyone can work on: keep members excited about the life of The Circus!

Who would you like to see play? February is already filling up, but we'll be booking for March soon, too.

Groups and Forums

Quick note on effective use of the "groups" feature: this is for use by established projects, a way for people to receive e-mails about just that and nothing else, if that's all they want to know about "The Circus". There's been a proliferation of extra groups recently, and at least until we move to our website 2.0, I'm going to be keeping it lean and easy to navigate - this thing is complicated enough as it is! Please check only one group for each post.

Including "Wallet", the sculpture installed November 5th by yours truly. As is my custom, I stopped by the station only to find numerous Art installations damaged. Most unsecured items were found turned over or in unusual positions similar to the storm of September 2008. As in that storm, I did what I could to prevent further destruction today as well.

It was to late for my beloved "Wallet" & "Black Heart" however, as the two piece's had become horribly twisted & broken by the forces of nature.

Outreach Meeting?

We've been talking about the need for some new energy for a while, but haven't made a real concerted effort at bringing new people into the fold in forever. I think an organized, promoted outreach meeting(s) is a good goal for a couple months out. We could work towards reorganizing ourselves in terms of presenting all the basics: what is the circus? how are we structured? what kind of work do? how can you get involved?

The Burning Man Network - Ten Principles

Seeing as how our Sideshow project dovetails nicely with the following, I thought it'd be cool to invite Burners to participate this year... here's what that community expects of it's perticipants:

Statement of Principles

Radical Inclusion

Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

Gifting

Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

The sister city concept is of course, not new. But there has always been something said for two areas miles apart, developing an affinity for each other to form a common bond. A family of Artist's from Rapid City S. Dakota, known as: ArtAlley has invited GardenStation to form such a bond.

AWESOME flash mini-game

I really like this for the music, and playing this game is like discovering paintings. It's a little weird at first, but give it time! It only takes about 20 minutes to play through, maybe less, and it's totally worth it, especially if you're nostalgic at all for metroid or castlevania (the originals)... This is more art than game, though.

I hate mini-flash games. This came highly recommended, so I tried it. Fantastic.

Free Antique Sewing Machine

International brand. Just rewired and tested it, it works great. This is one solid piece of machinery... It's got to weigh like 25 lbs.

I'm not sure if an electric sewing machine should be considered "antique" but it's got that antique look, except for the new plug - the old one was literally falling apart. It's definitely old enough that the plastic on the plug was decomposing!

Free to the first person to stop by the studio and prove that they'll actually use it, and not break it to turn it into "art".

CRAFT: magazine issues 9 & 10 FREE to good home [TAKEN]

Just got in my boxed sets, so I now have duplicates of CRAFT: magazine issues 9 & 10. Free to first responder on this thread.

I hope you make something good! I especially like the up-cycled plastic bags on the cover of issue 9... I've been saving up plastic bags ever since I saw the original messenger-bag project on Instructibles.

Dell photo 926 printer - for trade

Huh - Dell's 926 photo printer/scanner doesn't work with Linux. Or Mac. And has Problems with Vista, apparently.

So if you're running XP and don't imagine you'll upgrade any time soon (of course, Windows 7 will probably have decent driver support) and ALSO happen to have an HP printer, would you be willing to trade? It only has to have basic printing capabilities, I don't mind trading "down" - of course, for me, trading a useless lump of plastic for anything that will print on linux/mac would be awesome.

Life Enrichment Center

I went to this amazing place today, and thought it might be a place you all would like to see & maybe spend a little time doing community service at. I know Matt's family has been very involved there...maybe you can chime in. It's a 65,000 foot former office building on N Findlay St in East Dayton and every inch of the building is used for a variety of social services and community center activities. I went there because they're starting a bike program and have a giant room filled with bikes to fix up. There's only 2 paid staff and about 65 volunteers running the place.

A Fond Farewell for Maya Caballero

10/09/2009 - 08:30

As we know, Maya has been a real trouper for The Dayton Circus Collective & GardenStation. Maya's musical style captured the flavor of the garden with the big city flair of her New York City roots. The Urban Night patrons who happened to pass by the Station during her performance that night almost to a person, strolled on in to hear more.

Captivated by her limitless beauty, the small but appreciative audience felt the emotion & power of a songwriter who's truly been time-tested and traveled.

cSpace and the Circus - please post your thoughts...

There have been ongoing discussions, off and on, between the circus and cSpace about us renting space there and being able to use it - as a way of helping maintain the space. There are possibly parties other than cSpace interested in obtaining that space, so Anne is looking to groups like ours that could help defer the cost of renting. (This post continues...)

Loving the impossible,
I shutter-down my heart;
Keeping light from pouring out;
Safe within the dark.

Dark is good for nursing wounds,
Good for growing strong;
Also good for spawning dreams
Impossible to stop.

Much time between youth's tragic
Faults and middle-aged remorse.
More time to wonder at the cost.
Yet more to humble pride.

Still the shutters creak and moan
From love-star's sultry breath;
Still the light leaks through the
Dark
To brighten friendship's path...

Fires in the Valley-- Things We Still Need

Hey everybody!

For those of you who've been in and out of the space since we started this whole rehearsal and building process, you've see, I hope, that lots of people have put lots of hard work into it. I'm grateful to each one and acknowledge that between now (it's around 10 AM) and the top of the show (at 5 tomorrow night,) the craziness will continue. We've got most of our bases ccovered in terms of personnel, but there are a few holes. They are as follows:

Oregon Arts District - OSU / USC Game on a 9-Ft jumbtron! Immediately following the Street Fair!

09/12/2009 - 19:00

The Oregon Arts District will be hosting the OSU / USC game on a 9-ft jumbotron on Saturday evening, Sept 12. (This immediately follows Oregon's Street Fair that is on that same day from 10am until 6pm.) The game will be shown on the jumbotron that will be located in the parking lots right behind Ned Pepper's / Ohio EPA / Global Gauge. These lots will be roped off the entire day/night for the day's events. There is no entry charge for either event...just come and enjoy!

09/12/2009 - 01:00

Hey guys!

Urban nights is. . . ahem. . . two days away. no, this is not the message where I freak out. I am, but only a little. Tell your friends. Tell your enemies. Tell your parents and tell your children: the Garden's having two bands, a stage show, and a (hopefully) batshit crazy bonfire after polite society drifts off into the darkness. I will be there, probably pacing. You will be there because you love us all. Direct everyone to the Facebook event page, purtyy please. I don't know how to mount photos onto this site. . .

See you at the Garden!

Anything else?

I'd like to make a trailer

anyone ever made anything like this?

here's a pimped version like I would want to make, but I think it is really just the box type of trailer. Could anyone help me with something like this? Maybe in the spring. It would take me a while to aquire all of the stuff for it, and I'd have to have the time.

This would be a pretty swell toy box too!

Due to the renovation project at GardenStation, principally: dust & poor access to THE EASEL, the artist in residence, Rich "LowBow" Lober', has postponed the public offering of his piece: "Foreplay!!" until 09/11/'09.

This date corresponds with Urban Nights and the new and improved GardenStation.

Additionally, because of improvements to the Stations electrical system, THE EASEL@GardenStation & "Foreplay!!" will be a lighted event for the first time; barring any complications to the Garden project.

THE EASEL@GardenStation &

09/03/2009 - 12:00

The Art by Richard D. Lober': "Foreplay!!" is in fact completed and patiently waiting it's install upon THE E@GS on September 10th, 2009.

"Foreplay!!"

09/02/2009 - 09:49

Ain't nothing like the real thing baby.

"Foreplay!" (delayed?)

08/31/2009 - 12:11

YES! Though the piece is in fact ready for public acceptance on THE EASEL@GardenStation (509 East 4th Street).

However, due to the most extensive GardenStation renovation project (to date) the public preview of "Foreplay!" will be delayed until: 09/10/'09.

Marketing position.

I think we should have a designated person withint he membership (possibly as a year-long board position) dedicated solely to marketing our events. Case in point: the FOund Art Show at c}space was yet another artistic success and, for all I could see, at best a break-even event financially. Once again: the parking lot behind the space was packed and once again, our building had, at most, sixty people in it at any given time . Kidtee did everything within her power to let folks know the event was happening. Why don't we have one person for press releases, flyer distro, etc?

Fire

So we're putting the show together, and it's coming along pretty well. The torches will be there. Meestah Kenworthy and I will have the atages in place, the rehearsals are going well, and I'm calling back musicians to fill up te rest of the night.

There's one problem:

Soul Fire Tribe-- who'd agreed to work with us that night-- was already booked. Without fire dance, the whole theme of the night loses a great deal. Does anyone know other poi and fire folk aorund town? I'm making rounds upon rounds of calls and emails tomorrow as soon as I get up.

Experience: "Foreplay!!"

08/26/2009 - 11:39

Everyone can: during The URBAN NIGHTS Event - September 11th, 2009.

Everyone should: (after consulting with their Doctor) see "Foreplay!!" by Rich Lober' upon THE EASEL@GardenStation.

WARNING: an increase in blood-pressure & wild palpitations may be felt while viewing "Foreplay!!" by Rich Lober'. Though these feelings may not be ignored, they truly only represent foreplay and ain't nothing like the real thing baby.

So don't you miss perfect bliss in the latest dish by yours truly - Rich Lober' - artist extroidinaire - wango tango

Heyall,
The best way to experience Urban Nights really is on your bike. I know everyone's too busy Urban Nights, but this is just a quick ride to see the sights and show that bicycles belong on Dayton streets. Departs from the plaza in front of Dragon's stadium (5th/3rd Field) at 5:30. We hope to have a big crowd, and Commissioner Whaley and Police Chief Biehl will be riding with us too.

Call for submissions, Wayne underpass murals!

Call for submissions

We are a group of community volunteers focused on downtown beautification, specifically along Wayne Avenue between Third and Fifth Streets. We are looking for local artists to help paint a series of 10 murals under the train overpass at the Fourth Street and Wayne Avenue intersection. This project aims to use art to enliven the overpass and create a more attractive walkway between the Cannery and Oregon Arts District.

A "Search for Time-Travelers" '09

Through the Front Street CoffeeHouse I first met Mr. Jack Bowman during the creation process of Tuesday Night Poets, arguably the most successful poets gathering Dayton has ever experienced (It lasted 3+ years & may have continued to this day had not bad management closed Front Street).

"A Search for Time-Travelers" I believe, was Jacks most exciting concept in his performance art (circa: 1996).

Not only was it well received, it had the potential of making history!

Our Mission Statement

well our meeting are not currently at c{space and matts number is the wrong on to be calling currently since he is unable to recieve calls.... and do we still believe the statement bellow?? I do.....

Connect! Create! Express! Sustain!

We recognize the potential of every individual to create. We empower the members of our community by helping them actualize their dreams. We value the contributions of everyone, and we support each other with a true sense of community. We know that through collaborating with others, we create something greater than ourselves. (Read on...)

Urban Nights Update, Questions

Things are shaping nicely on the performers' end. I met with Astrea Taylor (fire dancer extraordinaire) and Ya-Ya Fambreau (Afro-Cuban drumming guru) today, walked through the space and bounced around ideas. All but one of the actor/writers has confirmed with me with a schedule (woot!) and Astrea found her fire toy at the studio. Also, she suggested we do a quick viral video and throw it around FB, Myspace, Youtube, yada yada yada. Made sense to me, so we'll do it next week after the first workshop rehearsal. Here's what I need from everyone else for right now:

Oregon Arts District Street Fair

The Oregon Arts District Street Fair is being held on Saturday, September 12 (the day after Urban Nights). We are looking for vendors (art, food, collectibles, 'stuff', etc) for the event. We are looking for additional entertainment as well.

If you or someone you know may be interested in getting a 10x10 space, please let me know asap. Also, we welcome non-profits as well and have significantly reduced costs for them to encourage their community good will!

I can be reached at mmartin@kamela.com or by phone at 974-2494.

dayton doc

hey all, please help ms kambitsch make this great--
several of you surely have a lot to say and share, and could maybe also further this onto the Courteous Mass Folks, Grow With Your Neighbours, and so on.

i think kate's endless striving to make the city more bicycle friendly could use some coverage, too-- and maybe just maybe it being included in this sort of thing will make the rest o the city officials agree with her on bike lanes and maybe a City Bike initiative.

here's patricia's letter to me--

Update

It's been a productive week for the ExtraTerrestrial Circus Experiment - We've been working in two different states! Adam (the leader) is working with a production of Barnum - a musical about life in the circus - at Penn State, while Olivia, Matt L and myself returned to Boston to assist with the big Open Air Circus kids' show. Tricia and Bee returned to Arizona, but we'll be meeting up again with them soon.

UN Dignitary visits my Master

a Dignitary from the UN visited with my Master in India recently. This is what he had to say:

URBAN NIGHTS IN THE GARDEN-- September '09

So here's what I'm thinking:

First things first: you can't schedule an Urban NIghts on September 11th without someone commenting on the significance of the date. The city planners are either totally oblivious or would assume that a community of artists will ignore it. either way, they're wrong :-)

GOT DONATION! for garden electric/lighting!!!

The Oregon Arts District is donating $2000 towards getting the power trenched to the back and lights!!!
With the matching anonymous donation we have enough to cover this project and hopefully more!
Jeff has a contact who does electric work for the city who is talking about donating the labor, we hope to meet him in the garden monday or tuesday to see if he is good to go. Jeff did tell him we want the project done by Urban Nights!
SO hopefully we can get this started in the next two weeks and hopefully we can get the city grant for the entryway.

City Employee Picnic in the Garden?

I'm toying with the idea of hosting a City of Dayton employee picnic in the garden. What do you think? Seems like good exposure, and we could maybe invite all 2,200 employees, including groups we'd been wanting to have out in the garden like Police & Fire. I'm thinking maybe September when it's a bit cooler. It would be a carry-in and I'd try to find funding for paper products & drinks.

Hello Everyone,

Hope everyone had an awesome 4th of July weekend. The crew at TenLivingCities.org wanted to get everyone up to date on all the plans for the "Forbes 10 Fastest Dying Cities" Symposium. We are making a lot of progress and getting a very positive response from all the cities involved and we are making new contacts every day.

Here's the Latest:

...and still growing

a little something on things

If everything weren’t piling up all around us we would have nothing to kick out of the way.
I think as frustratingly as not having my own computer or camera its still just another bump to try and remove from the course or find a way around it.

So I have been rebuilding and starting all over again. As it is part of life and in many ways, a blessed experience to recreate what you are doing with yourself.

Ramp up events?

So I spent most of April and May talking to people about putting up a series of small shows in order to build excitement around c}space. For whatever reason the idea was seen as untenable, primarily because the space is (stupidly) limited to a 49-person maximum capacity. What are the legal loopholes to use the Garden Station for the same purpose? We can use ther shows at the Station over the next two months to help pay for the space, the murals and paint supplies.

Anyone want to start a Time Bank?

I was thinking we could start it through the Circus/downtown arts community and let it grow from there. They just released the new start-up kits after being sold out, so I was thinking of going ahead and buying one. The concept is simple: for every hour you spend helping someone in your community, you get a "Time Dollar" that you can spend having someone in your community do something for you. Sort of a time-based local currency...can apply to anything that can remotely be quantified in hours. The software lets people log their hours.

things we need for the space

also if you can donate you time to sew, clean, paint, or help do inventory on monday 3-8:30, tuesdays3-8:30, thursdays9-5, or on saturday from 12-5

I need funds for our space

I need some basic things some hardware.... hinges maybe some paint(bright colors to liven the space), bolts and nuts, a lock box(to keep donations as the come in and petty cash... currently not locked up), two boxes with pad locks one inside the door and one directly outside the door for donations to the circus and materials to attach them....

The last few years, for too many of you it hasn't felt that way or to me......but it can and should

We can make this space awesome! Though small in many ways the possibilities are great! at the next meeting I would really like to discuss what is bellow....

I have a plan somewhat loose, but thought out as much as possible.....

there are steps and things that must come first.....

Blog on Urban Nights & Circus Role...

Not sure if I shared this earlier?
http://daytonology.blogspot.com/2009/05/urban-nights-almost-getting-it.h...

The Circus was a very key player here, taking the old bar at the corner of Jefferson and 3rd and adjacent restaurant space for a gallery/installation thing and a live music stage. The entire block between the Century and the corner was activated. Probably the best move was the drumming outside right on the corner, which created a knot of people and some interest/. Crowds draw crowds and this is exactly what went on here.

Dirty deeds done dirt cheap . . .

05/26/2009 - 10:00

. . . this weekend, May 30th & 31st, wear your cheap sunglasses, old clothes & please remember that even an hour or two (between 9 a.m. & 8 p.m.) each day would help. This is a relax deal (mudcakes 4 adults) so . . .

Mudding weekend!

05/30/2009 - 08:00
05/31/2009 - 20:00

weather permitting we will be working on mudding the straw bale shed all weekend!

Live Painting at Blind Bobs

Tamra and I went last night. Many circus affiliated folks were in and out and Audrey joined us in painting at one point too. We really enjoyed this and might continue to go paint everytime one of these events are held. Lily? Joel? Dan?

Any interest in changing business meeting day/time?

This is a question that surfaces everynow and then and I don't think we have ever resolved so I will throw it out there again... There are people that seem to have a conflict with meeting Saturday's at 1pm, but at the time when we started it was the time that people had the least conflict with... is this still the case or is there a better time or day when we might be able to get more people to attend the meeting?

rrfm!

first-- THANK YOU. garden station was a wonderful space for this, and i'm so glad most of the DDN photos showed the garden off so nicely!

second-- there's been such a nice response, it looks like we should rrfm more often, and the best rrfms in the country have set time/dates (so much so that at many people just come set up even if the sign isn't up yet) so i was wondering if i could change dayton rrfm info to say it will be at garden station the second sunday of may, july, and september. would garden station be okay with that?

Art Show at Vex this Thursday.

I just wanted to let everyone know that there will be an art show at club VEX this thursday. It is a benefit for Planned Parenthood's PUSH committe. This group is raising money to bring a sexual health educator back to dayton, because there is currently no one doing this position due to the lack of funds.

If you have art that is gypsy themed or similar in nature you are welcome to show it. We only ask that if you sell a piece you donate ten percent to PUSH for this cause.

come out to burrito jam this Thursday @ Garden Station and crash our Wayne corridor meeting!
The Young Creative Summit produced 4 main projects, one being the Wayne Avenue Corridor between 3rd and 5th. Since GS is a big part of that area and probably the space with the most potential i went to the Action meeting and ended up vice-chair of the project...
If you have some ideas for that area please come share!
as always please bring food to share or $1 to donate and instruments to jam on!

Free Skool

This isn't any type of official call for submissions or anything, but Jenn and I are still all about putting together a free skool.

If you have a skill and enough expertise to teach a whole class on it, please feel more than welcome to get in contact with us and offer your services.
The more volunteers to teach the sooner we can start getting this planned and make it happen.

Community Art Project

The community art project at Cspace for Urban nights turned out amazing. If you haven't seen it, you should really check out what these kids did!

I'd like to host a circus/garden station community art project.

For those of you who don't know. I provide a huge blank canvas, and start a piece of art. I provide materials and encourage people to bring their own. I spend most of my time trying to encourage experimentation in different ways while people of all ages work on the canvas.

Really Really Free Market Awesome!

Despite that fact I was up for 40-some hours at the point, and Maggie and I were still kicking people out of Sideshow at the break'a'freak'n dawn, the Really Really Free Market was AWESOME! GO Jenn!

The event made the paper twice and the pictures are sweet! You might be in them!!!

I was overwhelmed with feelings yesterday as I looked around at all the kindness, love, and sharing while remembering all of the hard work and contributions we have all made to have that garden in the first place.

I love that we are all artists or artistic using our talent for good!

Guest speaker Accidental Creative on May 19

Feeling creatively burned out?

One of the biggest struggles in a creative industry is STAYING creative. After pouring hours of hard work into projects, it’s easy for your creative well to run dry.

Luckily, Todd Henry of Accidental Creative is coming to help us with that problem. "Create or Die: Thriving in the Create-On-Demand World" is a presentation that will cover the phases of creative growth, the basic daily disciplines of healthy creatives and some "assassins" of personal and organizational creativity.

Sideshow Awesome

The public drum jam on the corner last night was among the coolest things I've witnessed/participated in here in Dayton. People of different races, backgrounds, old and young, all coming together to create music, dance, laugh, and enjoy. That would have been awesome in any city, anywhere in the world. Adam and Christine did a very cool job setting that up! A special highlight was a little kid, he couldn't have been more than three or four, keeping the beat for like twenty minutes. The drum was almost as tall as him!

Mudding "workshop"

05/18/2009 - 17:00
05/18/2009 - 20:00

so we have to finish lashing the bale walls and mudding them. There are 4 different coats with different "recipes". We will go over the first 2 coats, how to mix and apply them on Monday so that once you have learned those you can work on mudding the shed when ever you have a chance. I am still trying to get a hold of some of the workshop participants to see what time is best to have everyone there for the mud part of the "workshop", until everyone is there we will do some lashing.

Urban Nights will be:

05/14/2009 - 11:00

held next on: oh nine - eleven - oh nine: 09/11/09.

Our recent "guest" @GardenStation has checked out!

We have a camper @ the Station. His name is Michael and he's originally from Chicago (the home of urban blues). He has camped there in past years and enjoys the outdoors he says.

Lights and tissue paper

I need some tissue paper for some of my sculpture's finishing touches. These will be in sideshow.

I know the stuff is cheap, but...I am trying to use all recycled, found, or donated materials. (I feel strongly that we don't have to consume to produce.)

so these are things I could really use...

tissue paper
LED lights, strobe lights, any smaller lights that I not for lighting a room as much as just being cool
fishing line
some flowers
pop cans
exercise balls
plywood

We'll be celebrating this month at C.I.R.C.U.S. - The Dayon Circus Creative Collective's

Creation, Innovation, and Recreation Communal Use Studio.

It's been a source of inspiration for me, and there's certainly been a lot of creation there - now it's time for some Recreation!

The address is 73 N Dutoit St - Take Third St east from downtown, and make a left on Dutoit (a couple blocks after Keowee, in the Front St complex).

Schedule as follows:

7PM showing of the movie "Down the Rabbit Hole", a sort-of sequel to "What the Bleep?"

email inbox: 0

Holy crap, I just answered all the mail in my e-mail inbox for the second day running. It's a weird feeling... I'm so used to having at least 10 or 20 unread messages at the end of the day. I read all my online comics, browsed Digg, caught up on my favorite blogs, updated the Circus website... there's nothing left to do on the internet! WTF!!!1!

Thank God I got rid of StumbleUpon, that thing is like internet crack.

Well, I guess there really is nothing left to do after I post this blog entry. Um, sleep? read a book? meditate? play a song? who knows what kind of adventures lie ahead!

Michigan town’s artists use entire city as canvas

Creatives know art has the power to transform, but not when it’s only confined to enclosed galleries. The creatives in Grand Rapids, Michigan have taken this to heart, initiating two stellar art-transforming programs that cultivate artistic expression throughout the city.

Circus Hiatus

Hi There Everyone,

I've been presented with a golden opportunity, and it will require me taking a hiatus from Circus-related work. I'll be traveling with the Extra Terrestrial Circus Experiment over the summer, running sound and performing live music for their sets... for those of you who have attended either of our Rak's Mystique events, they're the jugglers/acrobats/fire spinners who performed for us at those shows. For you animal lovers who haven't seen them, don't fret - it's an all-human circus, devoid of animal cruelty.

Scarlet Trust is dead

She died last night in columbus.

I planted a garden on the concrete and buried her in it. I planted flowers and LED lights around her corpse, and a private vigil was held, and flowers were given to the people passing by.

A huge march of protesters simultaneously marched down high street carrying legalize it signs and smoking joints. I gave them flowers from Scarlet's grave.

Bylaws Update

As per the discussion at the informal meeting today, this seems like a good time to revisit the bylaws, make amendments and changes.

Having operated for a couple years now, I think most of us have a good idea of what has been working and what hasn't. There's also room for improvement in the language of the document, in terms of the culture it promotes.

The original can be found here: http://www.daytoncircus.org/files/File_Share390/bylaws.doc

I do not believe it has been changed to reflect the most recent amendment, dealing with quorum issues.

Hello! - New to the Circus

Hello everyone!

I hope I posted this in the right forum...

I'd like to introduce myself. I'm new to your group and very much looking forward to learning from you and participating in some Circus events. I'm a Middle Eastern dancer and henna artist. I attended Raqs Mystique this past Saturday and had a ball! Well done. I can't wait for the next event. :)

If you have any advice/suggestions to new members, please share! I'm a bit confused about what is c{space versus The Circus and when/where all the meetings are for the different sub-groups.

Innovation Dayton

Hey everybody,

We have been given the opportunity to have a table or display at the Innovation Collaborative event on May the 14th. The event will be held at c{space from 6pm.

Would anyone like to attend and help me out with this? There is going to be free food and drink, also live entertainment from Sleepybird.

This is the Thursday before the Sideshow. I also put in a request for a separate booth for Garden Station - I could set it up and run it if L&L can't. This looks to be very low key, and probably a good time!

C.I.R.C.U.S. now has a Mac Pro!

Guess who just saved $2,500 on a quad-core mac?

Utilizing my L337 h4xx0r sk1llz I have installed Mac Leopard 10.5.6 on the Circus computer, giving us the capabilities of a $2,500 Mac Pro. It has Aperture and Final Cut Pro Express installed, a quad-core 2.66 intel with 6GB of RAM, a DVD-burner with Light-scribe capabilities, and over 2 TB of storage. Mac people, rejoice! You now no longer have to deal with windows (ugh!) or learn the vagaries of Linux to enjoy the luxurious storage and sleek super-fast computational powers of the Circus computer.

(Matt, just a friendly reminder to post these)

Everyone welcome. Decisions made by consensus of voting members.

Please post your agenda items below.

The Swamp (another short story)

About forty cigarettes into the semester, we were referred to as “the cancer kids.” It’s funny that they called us that, because the cruelty of the statement actually didn’t faze us, nor the validity of the statement. The others just really didn’t understand; they didn’t know how we worked. There was an air about us so-called cancer kids, and it wasn’t just a cloud of thick smoke. We had something other than a pack of Marlboro’s and a lighter. The Swamp was our haven, our paradise…in a way, the Swamp made us feel like smoking cigs was a decent way to make friends.

c{space open meetings

Excerpt from an e-mail from Anne Rasmussen, President of Dayton Creative Incubator (the group hosting c{space):

Starting next week, Wednesday, April 15, we will change our meeting time to 6:30-8:00 and hold them as open meetings. As such, I think the best use for them at least for a while will be to garner ideas and involvement from the new people that show up. So the focus of these meetings will be on bringing in new volunteers, explaining c{space's mission to them, explaining how/where they can get involved and then listening to the ideas they will bring with them.

OPen Spaces. Front STreet. The Next Phase

Available spaces at front street?...

I have been taking personal investment for some time now in seeing the front street creative community grow in vitality and cohesiveness. Every few months or so someone gives up their space and moves out. There are several different uses tenants make of the space. Some people build motorcycles or cars, others, sculpt, paint, draw-explore the visual world, some folks focus more on the audio world of sound expression. There are people who use it for storage, for creative expression, and to run a business...

Poetry by Me :)

Virginia
(a tribute to Virginia Woolf)
You lavishly described language as the wine upon your lips-
It was poisoned.
What happened to your country, your feminine country
Slipping through your fingertips, like your sanity—
Drowning in their taunts and drug down by the rock—the man.
Instead of telling the voices what’s what… they were your one escape,
Your only guarantee for pure bliss.
INSANITY-it is always better when drowning
And love is always better when only one person is hurt
Was the wine too strong, Virginia ?
Intoxication of metaphors, of poetry,

Skippin' town--NO FRIDAY MOVIE

Hey folks, I'm heading down to South Carolina today to spend some time with my mom and won't be back until at least this weekend. So I will not be showing the garden/public art movie at c{space on Friday like I said I would in the meeting.

p.s. Great meeting Saturday! I think Spring is bringing some new energy for the Circus, don't you?

Here's the deal - there are always people giving away free pianos if you can come and pick it up.

-Is it possible for us to pick some of these pianos up and put them somewhere to be used socially by people?
-Are we renting the building that Jenn got for Ladyfest?

Here's three free piano listings I saw today...

Performance Art

I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a Performance Art scene in Dayton any longer (at least that I am aware of). Is this true? I remember when I came to Dayton 3.5 years ago - there was always a performance art event space on Urban Nights. Can anyone shed more info on this?

Homemade instrument making party!

So my large wood scultpures I have been talking about are not only things to engage your body in movement but they are also instruments. They all make different sounds but require the entire body to make them work. I'd like to have some get togethers before the sideshow in the garden where people can come make their own homemade instruments that they can use in conjunction with me pieces at the sideshow. Would anyone be into something like this?

I love this poem

Monet Refuses The Operation by Lisel Mueller

Doctor, you say there are no haloes
around the streetlights in Paris
and what I see is an aberration
caused by old age, an affliction.
I tell you it has taken me all my life
to arrive at the vision of gas lamps as angels,
to soften and blur and finally banish
the edges you regret I don't see,
to learn that the line I called the horizon
does not exist and sky and water,
so long apart, are the same state of being.
Fifty-four years before I could see
Rouen cathedral is built
of parallel shafts of sun,
and now you want to restore

Looking for Volunteers fo a kind of strange sounding project

I know this sounds strange, but I promise the outcome of what I am doing has proven to be beautiful with my first completed cast.

I am looking for people who would be willing to let me create a plaster mold of their entire body to create a life size sculpture of them. That might not sound so hard but, here is the detail that makes me think it will be very hard to find people to volunteer. I need the volunteer to also have actively kept journals or blogs throughout there life and be willing to give them to me and let me basically shred them and grind them up.

and one more announcement

my friends that own the lavender farm are hiring summer workers. I am going to be helping harvest lavender and work on the earth-ship one day a week. If anyone else is interested email me and I will help you get connected with them.

Open Art Saturdays @ c{space

03/07/2009 - 12:00
03/07/2009 - 15:00

Sorry for the late notice, but we're starting Open Art Saturdays at c{space in March. This is a time for anyone who wants a place to work on a project in the company of other artists & crafters. So break out that painting or knitting project you've been meaning to work on. Bring your favorite iPod play list or mix tape to share music. I know this conflicts with the Circus meeting, but maybe you all want to work on projects while discussing the Circus?
We're starting with a 3 hour window, but as we have more volunteers to keep the space open, we'll look to expand.

WHAAAAAA ha ha!

Check this amazing list out. I think I've got several of these down, but now I have a new idea lto shoot for (except for eat more meat).

Button Maker Instructions

I am cleaning and I realized I still have the instructions and template. I forgot to put them in the box. I need to return them.

I downloaded a template from the internet and made my button that way by printing out many templates all at one time. I forgot to bring the circus ones to the burrito jam last time. I will print out a whole bunch of them though and put them in the box with the instructions. This way whenever anyone has free time they will be there for people to cut and make.

should I return this thursday? Let me know who I need to give it to and when.

Mural Paint

I've been trying to get this paint for the mural for days. Lily got it all set out for me last night but I was so tired and River feel and bit his lip, so I forgot to grab the paint on my way out. I had the diaper bag and all the mom gear already. I did return the button maker last night.

Lily said she'd try to get the cans for me later but isn't sure she can. Matt said he is busy all day and can't help me. Lily set the paints out on the floor of the closet so if anyone gets in cspace for any reason could you get the paint and I will even come to your house and pick it up from you.

dreamt collective

people have been asking me allot of questions about Dreamt, and so I'd like to say a little bit about that. Jenn, correct me where I am wrong please.

It's something we are just now forming and it is something we see as different than the circus. The mission is different, we are not trying to plan events or get a space or anything like that. Dreamt is somewhat of an idea or resource really. Dreamt is for projects, happenings and creating.

so if you want to see more go to the myspace page hehehe http://www.myspace.com/gardenstation I will be uploading them all today:)

my thoughts on the current issues

I been with the circus and the sideshow since it started.....
I remember me, laurana, and Mike Officer being there just about everyday working......... trying to trust in laurana's vision and man I am glad I did.... to me allot of the issues with attendence and trust and things like that are more a question....
do I trust the other members... well yes I do but the may not have the same opinion as I do..... so here is what I think....
What is the real issue..... attendance not quarum.... people don't want to come out anymore we have in many ways lost site of what our goals are...........

Thinking out side our own creative box.....

So on a gut feeling I called about a space..... its located at 110 E 3rd st.....

I looked in and Wow what a great feeling so... I called the number on the poster in the window....I have never done this and I was so nervous.... I don't deal with these kinds of things well.... I felt bubbles in my stomach..... I know in my head we need a downtown pressence.... we need a space that is our and a place where we can grow....

We just got a place at front st I know this.... and this is where I ask to keep an open mind.....

Help Needed with a Project

I am making to large platforms that will rock when you stand on them. I am making them out of wood. I need to borrow a jig saw, but if someone is an excellent wood worker it would be sweet if someone could assist me. I took like one class in wood working and sucked at it for the most part. I'd feel more confident using all the tools if someone were willing to help me since it has been a while. These platforms are part of my first performance art piece that I am performing with my class in columbus. I posted the proposal about it already.

This could be a GREAT opportunity to invite people to stick around after the meeting, eat burritos, take a look at c{space, talk about the circus, garden station...
are there brochures left we can have on hand for either the circus or the garden?

Under Where?

I'm working on this installation in downtown Columbus and if all goes well I'll be performing for the first time at the final show. If you are in the area during this time, drive by and check it out!

Project Purpose:

General maintenance

After cleaning up the forums and mothballing a bunch of old forums to the "archives" section, I deleted most of the groups, renamed a few, and created one dedicated to "Garden Station". All posts were saved, and changed forums/groups as needed. Hope this makes picking a forum and deciding who your "audience" is a little easier!

KARUNA

Karuna is the desire to remove harm and suffering from others

In a world where focus on individual achievement is the measure of success, I am compelled to bring people together to shed light on compassion and it's meaning. To that end, I will be gathering an ensemble to discuss, envision, create and share a work called KARUNA (sanscrit for compassion) to be performed at the University of Dayton's Celebration of the Arts, April 15th at the Schuster Center.

Come to Install Fest and get a MAJOR upgrade in terms of speed, performance, security, and community when you switch to Linux :)

I know this is concurrent with our meeting, but I'll be there from 10-12 AM, and if you want Linux another time you can hit me up and I'll do everything for/with you for FREE. Ongoing free tech support on all my installs, too :) Can Bill Gates say that?

A Love Letter to The Circus, Dayton, and All Y'all!

This is a very exciting time for me personally, as well as for Dayton in general. I'm creating a lot, participating a lot in a lot of different collaborative creative endeavors (Circus, Dayton Dirt Collective, c{space and others), and most of all experiencing a grander version of myself than I could have conceived of a couple years ago. I owe a lot to other members of The Circus both for inspiration and in assisting me in various ways to create this new version of myself.

Oh yeah, front page, baby!

And to think, it only costs $140,000 to get this kind of coverage

Circus Button Maker!!! (Where are you?)

I keep getting requests to use the button maker, but it's been AWOL for months now. I've looked through (almost) everything at the Front St Circus Studio and there's little to no evidence of the button maker. The last I heard of it was before we got that space anyways. Has anyone seen it? Who was the last person to check it out? If we can't find it, should we buy another one?

Zachary Armstrong talk at Gallery 510

01/16/2009 - 19:00
01/16/2009 - 20:00

Artist Talk by Zachary Armstrong
today, Friday, January 16, 7pm

Hear artist Zachary Armstrong talk about the inspiration for the artwork in his solo show "Constructed Paintings" at Gallery 510 Fine Art. His latest body of work explores his love of "the process of construction, appreciation of the patina on an old piece of wood, recycling of previously used materials and sense of design".

This event is free and open to the public.

Inauguration Lunch Party at c{space!
Where will you be when Obama takes the Oath of Office?

The 44th President of the United States will be sworn in next Tuesday at noon...and where will you be for this historic event? Will you be sitting by yourself at your computer, or maybe with a couple coworkers in your lunch room?

If you'd rather be gathered with a crowd of good company, watching the event live and projected larger-than-life, please join us at c{space, a new community center being developed in downtown Dayton. No matter whom you voted for, you'll be glad you did.

Slideshow: early development of c{space

We had a DaytonCREATE meeting on Monday, so I put together some pics of c{space in action:

http://picasaweb.google.com/NivreNyrhtak/CSpaceSlideshow#

Small offset press plus other stuff at the Montgomery County Gov Auction

Was just perusing their auction site and came across this AB Dick Model 360 offset press for sale - no bids yet, opening bid $30 http://www.govdeals.com/eas/itmDisplay.cfm?itemID=6051&acctID=63. From what I can find on google about it, it seems that it will print up to 11 x 17 in one color. Of course, you'd need the ability to make plates for it and wouldn't you know, the county also has a plate maker for sale (follow the link for seller's other items) also starting at $30 no bids yet.

c{space volunteers

We're in need of some volunteers to help organize c{space and get things ready for the first major fundraiser for the space. We'll need some shelves built, some large, heavy furniture moved, and some help (during normal business hours) moving things in from the Firefly building.

Please let me know your availability and I'll set up a time. Also, come to Burrito Jam and let's kick it! I'll have my turntables set up at the next one for MASSIVE JAMZ.

Circus Scanner and Laser Printer @ c{space

If you make your way to c{space, be sure to check out the new (well, used from VMA) laser printer and Laurana's old scanner hooked up to the Circus computer. Log on to any Circus guest account and they ought to work right away!

D'Art Zine Meetings go into High Gear

With the Mid-to-late-February publication date looming in the not-too-distant future, we've started meeting twice a week to approve submissions and cover layout and design issues. Lots of submissions to go through, mainly short fiction. It's not too late to submit work for this issue, but we are requesting that you submit in-person at a meeting. ALSO! We want your sketches/doodles. Please submit to DaytonZine@gmail.com or bring them by the next meeting. Bryan and I will be approaching strangers and friends alike for doodles and sketches in our pads for the rest of the month.

We're meeting Tusdays and Fridays at 6 PM @ c{space, 20 N Jefferon St. (Read on for details!)

Inauguration viewing pizza party @ c{space?

So the actual swearing in ceremony will be at noon on the 20th. I was thinking that a lot of downtown workers might not be able to see it at their offices, and it might be a good opportunity to expose them to c{space. We could order pizza and charge maybe $10 at the door as a fundraiser and get the wireless broadcast projected on the wall. What do you think? Would some people see this as too partisan?

Happy New Year fellow writers and friends of writers, I hope everyone is doing well and feeling full of energy for all your new and fresh writing ideas. In the spirit of starting things new and fresh, we’re going to try something different this Wednesday.

Introducing…drum roll….

WRITING JAM

The Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace

“Once upon a time, there was a brand-new tiny princess trapped in a crystal palace high atop a mountain with twinkling lights all around her. She was beautiful, fragile and precious, and she had her whole life ahead of her. But the fortress was cursed, and the innocent petite princess was frightened. All she needed was a valiant knight, a protector, to come and save her….”

Open to all. Decisions made through consensus by administrative members.

Focus: Grouping on the administrative roles & responsibilities that allow us to function effectively as a group...such as membership process, fundraising, meetings, communications, website, etc.

PRIORITIES for the first half of 2009

After an enjoyable overnight, we had some (I think) productive conversation concerning my perceived need for us to better focus our energies and better engage people around clear priorities. We discussed limiting our direction at least until after the Sideshow on the following (in no particular order):

* SIDESHOW 4--May, Maggie has the lead responsibility for this. This is what brought us all together and is our key yearly event.

NYE @ Front St

FYI...sounds like a good time at Front St tonight with lots of bands. Hope to see your faces there.

Bonfire in the Garden?

12/27/2008 - 20:30
12/27/2008 - 22:58

So the weather's freaky & we should make use of it in the garden. I'm thinking about doing a bonfire in honor of my mom's 60th birthday tonight. She doesn't live here most of the year though & therefore doesn't know many people here, so I would want anyone & everyone to join us. She wants to go to Blind Bob's, and then I was thinking I could surprise her with cake & a bonfire after. Don't have the details worked out, but I thought I'd post the idea as a heads up in case you're looking for something to do tonight. Check back later.

MisFits @ GardenStation

12/08/2008 - 14:44

Last night (12/07/08) around 11:30pm, I found two men, one at the front door & one at the rear door, trying to break-in our tool shed @ GardenStation. As I don't own a cellphone, I nevertheless "faked a call to the cops", compelling the two men to run for their freedom. Minutes later I observed a noisey black chevy pickup with no rear license plate light, cruise by GS. A fast but careful evaluation by myself revealed that I prevented them from gaining a full entrance. Appropriate calls were made to L & L. I apoligize for the lateness (of the calls) but I really did not know what else to do.

anyone on this list would be interested in serving as an "expert."

Will someone help me dread my hair?

My friends moved away that were going to help me, and most of my friends just wont help me because they don't want me to have dreads. Maybe you know someone who will help me?

I can make glass dread beads on my torch, but I'm bummed because I can never wear them.

The Mayor wants to feature The Circus on 'Mayor's Beat'

If you regularly watch public access TV (and who doesn't?), you'll know that Mayor McLin has her own 'Mayor's Beat' TV show to showcase 'Dayton gems.' Her assistant just left my office after talking about featuring The Circus. Let's talk about this tonight at Burrito Jam.
Here are some details:

-Will be edited down to 15 minutes
-Interviews with 1-2 people
-I will submit a dozen or so questions for the Mayor to ask along with digital pictures for the intro, they will send me a script a few days before.

DDN: Riverbend Art Center may close

Riverbend Arts Center may close

By Joanne Huist Smith
Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 11, 2008

DAYTON — Dayton's Riverbend Art Center may close in January due to the city's ongoing financial quagmire. Cathy Shanklin, the city's director of Recreation and Youth Services, has proposed closure of the art center at 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave. as a budget-saving measure.

"Nothing is set in stone. This is just a proposal," Tom Biedenharn, the city's director of public affairs, said. "As the budget process unfolds, we'll know more."

WE CAN’T DO THIS ALONE! WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need organizers in every major city to work with us and get out the protest! I know you’re all tired from all of the work you’ve done for this great election year, but I’m asking for one more push!

Alla This

I have a small Ani obsession if you didn't know that already. Every time I see her play or hear her music it makes me wanna change the world somehow, or change myself. Thought I'd share some cool lyrics from her new album.

"I will maintain the truth I knew naturally as a child
I won't forfeit my creativity to a world that's all laid our for me
I will look at everything and I will vow to bear in mind
That all of this was just someone's idea, it could just as well be mine."

i just thought this part would be especially aspiring to artists on here.

How do we reach out to young professional creatives

We want to embrace the thriving youth creative culture in Dayton and inspire better creative and a sense of community pride and excellence. What are soem of your suggestions to do this?

Columbus International Film Festival

he Columbus International Film Festival was founded in 1952, by the late Dr. Edgar Dale, Professor Emeritus of The Ohio State University and other professionals interested in promoting the use of 16mm motion pictures. Since its inception, the object of the Film Festival has been to encourage and promote the use of media in all forms of education and communication, not only in the local community but throughout the world. During these many years of continuous operation, the Festival has honored thousands of film and video producers.

fake snakes?

anyone know where I can get a whole bunch of fake snakes? Rubber ones perhaps? cheap.

also. I decided I am going to try to get rid of a whole bunch of old artwork at my booth for haunted harvest. Some stuff people have probably never seen before. It will be cheap. Take it please. (Cheap doesn't mean it sucks!)

I am being taken over by art I have no room to store.

My Harvest Fest costume--feel free to join me

Circus Space Vision

Everyone! A fervent call to your hearts, minds, and spirits:

The Circus is looking for a space to host itself and create a niche of creativity, fun, and spectacular awesome for all to revel in. What might this look like?

We spun a visionary tale some time ago, but perhaps in light of the dynamic membership process we've witnessed over the last year and a half, this could stand to be refreshed.

Performers wanted for Wed Oct 1st 2008

I want there to be a lot of eclectic performers for the open mic. It will be going on from 8:30pm - 11pm. I know that there is this strange mindset that open mic is for people to play acoustic guitar and sing. Nothing wrong with that. But come and do poetry or bring electronic equipment. Come dance or just talk. If you know anyone who plays music that you'd like to see perform - invite them! I've already sent out invites to some of my favorite performers from Dayton to Yellow Springs. So invite more people or just bring yourself for a FREE fun Wednesday night event!

Consider housing a campaign worker

I've been bummed that, between restrictions on city employees and lack of time I can't do more to support my chosen presidential candidate. I just got an email saying how the campaigns are hoping to send massive amounts of volunteers to Ohio between now and Nov 4, so I'm gonna go buy an air mattress & give someone my living room for a month or so. Given that some of you are couchsurfers, and are just plain hospitable people, I thought I'd pass along the idea. Visit the candidate or PAC website of your choosing for more info.

funny story--the organized homeless

A coworker sits on a homelessnes task force and was chatting with someone at their meeting. Somehow the conversation turned towards how the homeless seem to be organizing activity along wayne ave, that it's impressive that they're getting things together and seem to be having their own events. After a few minutes of absolute confusion, my coworker realized the lady was talking about our garden!...I guess we look like homeless people! (with our cars parked there!)

08/21/2008 - 17:00

Going to do a walkthrough of the upper floors (above the Ladyfest space) - the same one we looked at in February, but all the floors above as well. Brian West (one of the owners) will be doing it, so we'll have a chance to talk about the possibility of doing communal living, studio, and office space there. Very Exciting! Call me 789-0591 if you want to go.

Who knows something about electricity?

OK, I called the DP&L new construction line, and all I learned is that we need to fill out this form: http://www.dpandl.com/pdfs/CommercialPacketRevised_new08.pdf
The lady said that if it’s in an with existing poles & whatnot nearby, then the cost should be minimal, if anything. But they do need to know a thing or two about our needs (in the application). I know nothing about electricity, just that I try to avoid it whenever possible…so can someone help me out?

Thanks,
Kate

Hi Kate,

Zine Meeting : Post Available times

If you'd like to come to the next zine meeting, post your availability (august 20th-30th) in the comments of this post, and I'll schedule a meeting around the most convenient times for the most people.

Schedule will go up on Friday, so be sure to post before then!

A GNU/Linux Success Story

Alright! Our first success scores a win for Freedom (as in Speech), Free (as in Lunch), The Circus, and (maybe) the environment.

Lisa's computer broke, and after scrounging around at McMRF she came up with an old Dell Windows 98 SE machine (since upgraded to XP, but whatever).

Could we have a mural up by Urban Nights?

I know we keep going around on the mural topic - but I was thinking that Urban Nights (Sept 12th, btw why do they call it urban nights when it is a one night event?) might be a good dead line for the first mural or two to go up. Soon it will be too cold to paint, and that is the last big downtown event for the year other than Halloween. I will gladly paint Grow Creative in a fun and fanciful manner if need be - Dan volunteered something along this line too if I remember right - lots of people are interested, let's just do it!

Kudos to whoever painted over the grafitti in the garden this week

I think it is important that we keep on top of that - good quick work thanks to whoever did it...

Gnu/Linux Machines - upgrade or build your own

Need a new computer? Tired of being locked into Windows, dealing with anti-virus software and being locked into proprietary software? Have an old computer you want to fix up, or just want to learn more about how your system works?

I'd like to help!

I'll gladly get you set up with a new computer (at cost - $200 or less depending on the parts you can scrounge), teach you how to build and install everything yourself, or just help you get GNU/Linux set up on your computer. Ubuntu is my favorite, but there are many ditributions to choose from... Fedora, OpenSUSE, Slackware, etc.

Update from the C.I.R.C.U.S. - Creation, Innovation, & Recreation Communal Use Studio @ 50 Front St

I've managed to hack together a homebrew Wi-Fi satellite system (if any of you were wondering what the spaghetti colander on top of a mic stand was, that's what it is) that manages to pull in internet at about 80 Kb/s. Fine for browsing and the odd download, but not great for multi-media downloads. The Communal C.I.R.C.U.S. Computer is dual-booting Linux and XP, much to my satisfaction after that sordid ordeal of creating my own XP installation disk from motherboard drivers that came on a floppy disk for a motherboard that has no floppy port.

Want to help start a Pecha Kucha night?

Hi Kate,

Jill Davis, here. You've seen me around the South Park neighborhood, married to Nick. Anyway--our Toastmasters public speaking club at Design Forum is interested in starting a Pechu Kecha Night in Dayton. We've visited one in Indianapolis and plan on seeing the next one in Columbus. We found it to be very lively very friendly cultural dialog. If you are not familiar with PK Nights yet see www.pecha-kucha.org. Or read about it in Wikipedia. It's a global phenomenon that's been written up in Time and Wired.

Day out of Time at Garden Station.

Tomorrow, July 25th, is an internationally celebrated holiday that celbrates peace, culture, spirituality, unity, love of the biosphere, and living in harmony with nature's rhythms. Check it out by doing a google search of "day out of time."

Some Chairperson, huh?

I'd much rather have the meetings on a regular basis than rearranged each month to fit different schedules. Even though that means I missed this month's meeting due to a family trip (that's been on my calendar for months). Jeff, I'm hoping you took audio again?

Ladyfest & 20 Jefferson?

Last night at the DaytonCREATE Creative Incubator meeting, Mary Kathryn and Jen Money took a quick tour of the space. Unless the building owner has a problem with it (our architect friend will be finding out ASAP), it looks like 20 Jefferson will be the home of Ladyfest the weekend of Urban Nights (Sep 12-14). If anyone has the energy, please find a way to help them out. Any improvements & cleaning they do for the space will benefit us all in the long run as we look to continue to use the space for creative purposes.

Gone for a week

I'll be gone all this week, which puts me out of town for the meeting this Saturday. Call me if you need anything, I'll call you back... and of course feel free to use the communal studio. Don't count me against Quorum!

A community organizing job with East End & Ruskin School

Garden Name Ideas...

as was decided at the last monthly meeting we are going to choose a formal name for the Garden at the July meeting, which is on the 19th a little over two weeks from now. If you have a suggestion now is the time to make it - think in terms of something simple that would look nice painted on a sign and that would be easy to say when telling people about the garden or soliciting sponsors, etc. I need to review my notes to see what all the main suggestions were at the June meeting but the main ones I remember are:

1. Grow Creative!

2. Oasis

3. The Garden at 4th and Wayne

Looking for volunteer artists

Culture Works is hosting a special event for the arts in the fall. As part fund raiser, part centerpiece they are looking for artists to finish wooden lazy susans. The artist has the freedom to do whatever they wish as long as the finished surface is able to be cleaned. Think Polyurethane coating. The lazy susans are approximately 24-26" in diameter. If you are interested, please email me at ddyer8201@earthlink.net or call 433-2171. I will make arrangements to get the lazy susans to you.
Thank you

recommendation for first movie in the garden

If & when we're able to get the projector/generator/speaker set-up going, I suggest we watch "The Real Dirt on Farmer John." I just finished watching it, and it strikes me as made for the occasion!
We should get together and watch it soon regardless. Wow.

Creative Fencing or Trellises. . .

http://a332.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/38/l_216a6d64747879a01f1fd...

I found a slew of these VERY sturdy metal frames at McMrfs today. Height is roughly close to 5ft!

I am going back to McMrfs Friday to get more to make a long barricade to put in the Community Garden. I will take the liberty of esembling them together. We could take leftovers to make trellises as Lisa suggested to me.

The garden looks great!

What a difference a week makes, there have been lots of improvements and it just gets better each time I see it - I stopped by after kate's meeting last night and was thoroughly impressed... not certain who all did the work but great job to all that did! If you haven't been to the garden space stop down and have a look, Burrito Jam is there this Wednesday evening.

Zine Workshop @ Mary Katherine's

07/31/2008 - 17:00
07/31/2008 - 19:00

from an e-mail I received from jenn:

"so, there will be a Zine Workshop at Mary Kathryn's House July 31st

the workshop will be end product based, with the goal being that all particpants make their own miniature personal zine.

please bring tools to share-- pens, pencils, markers, stencils, typewriters, interesting paper-- whatever you would like to share to make these personal artifacts together. we will try to have a scanner/printer available for reproduction, but if that goes awry we will have a field trip to a copyshop at the end."

i forgot to add the ladyfest zine workshop!

we're holding one of our workshops early, so that if participants wish to we can have their work on hand!

so, there will be a Zine Workshop at Mary Kathryn's House July 31st

Ladyfest-- events info, calls for help, etc.

As many of you know, some folks and i are working on event this fall.

per usual, this will be trying to make the grandest get together with the least money.

i know that many folks are unfamiliar with the roots of ladyfest, so here is a quick overview, thanks to wikipedia:

"Ladyfest is a community-based, not-for-profit global music and arts festival for female artists that features bands, musical groups, performance artists, authors, spoken word and visual artists, and workshops; it is organized by volunteers.

A Halloween Idea for the Garden....

So I have been thinking that in addition to our regular first friday events in the garden, that we might could do something for Halloween in the garden since there are a ton of people (drunk and noisey at that) that come down to the district for that - seems like something we could capitalize on... either for money or good will or both!

We had a great time at last week's Burrito Jam playing with the projector and drinking fresh organic fruit & veggie juice. Lisa has lent us use of her electric piano since we picked her up a real piano for her house at McMRF on Friday.

Come out this week to make stepping stones for the communal garden (assuming resident Pirate-at-Large Lisa makes her peace with the Ninjas this weekend and doesn't end up with a shiruken to the heart). And as always, ye olde buritoe vittles!

DaytonCREATE meeting re: 20 Jefferson

06/25/2008 - 19:00
06/25/2008 - 21:00

Everyone is welcome to come to my DaytonCREATE team meeting. One of our team members is the president of the architecture firm (the only tenant) above the 20 Jefferson space (the big bank we looked at) and the building owner is willing to let him use the space however he sees fit for free. I think the team finally has consensus on wanting to begin to open the space for downtown community & art purposes. There's a lot of money standing in the way though.

Railway exevation

I think I got permission from Lily that I can use some cinderblocks to align outside of the iron rail. She mention that is easy to ask metroparks for more. We dug to discover the rotton wood tie and a nail still intact. it was so rotton that it was easy to pull it out. We decided to just keep it unexposed and put the blocks over. We found some rocks underground that can be used to fill up the gap as you can see in the picture. Or use the rocks in other locations.

Paint Party in the Garden! 10 am Saturday

So while we have been having the discussion about who gets to put art on the walls in the garden space (see here if you missed that discussion) another person has started to tag the wall to the left of the annoying VelcroChoke tag. Enough I say, unless anyone is opposed I am going to roll over them both tomorrow starting about 10am in the garden using the white paint Matt got from McMurf today - probably not the best paint to use but its better than what is there now.

Musicians--want to play the airport?

By John Nolan

Friday, June 13, 2008

DAYTON — Montgomery County's economic development director and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company are among the first music acts planned when the Dayton International Airport starts up its schedule of live music in the lobby of the terminal building.

Joe Tuss, the county official, said he plans to appear solo at the airport for the June 27 startup of the live music, although he is a guitar player in a trio called the Jaywalkers that performs twice a month at Cafe Boulevard, an Oregon District nightspot.

General Garden Work discussion

Post details of garden work sessions here.

I need help for two of my beloved ones!

I will be homeless in 10 days, and I'm having some trouble placing my two kitties in a good home or homes. I've been asking around for months now...

My girls:

Chloe (on the left) is a stereotypical black cat. A little aloof and a little crazy. She's high strung and I used to catch her all the time licking the walls of my old house. She loves to be talked to and likes to sleep in the bed and make biscuits. She still runs around like a kitten.

I've drafted Ilya as the garden's 'honeysuckle management specialist.' He has a winch that he devised to pull out honeysuckle, so we'll be attempting to use it tomorrow evening sometime after I'm done with work (times are approximate)...thought I'd post in case anyone thinks this sounds like fun. For the stuff that's growing back on the Wayne Ave end. Mike Elsass is loaning his big truck.

Any word on the fire permit yet?

Chipping is On Today Starting at 1pm till dark or we run out of material!

Just posting this here in case you missed the announcement under the city commision post! There are two people coming from metroparks with the chipper but one of them leaves at two, the other one is required to operate the chipper, so we need people to drag the tree material to them. Come help if you can, the more hands the better!

Also they don't have a truck to put the wood chips into, so where ever they chip, the wood chips will stay - I suggest we pick an out of the way spot where we could leave the chips until we need them - no sense in moving a pile twice

Garden Presentation

Lisa and I gave this presentation to a large crowd at St Anne's Hill Neighborhood Association's meeting last night. They seemed to like the idea!

Open house for everyone who wants to know a little bit more about the circus, how to get involved, and/or anyone interested in making use of the creative space we're using as a shared studio. Been lurking online, and want to put some names to faces? Would you like to showcase your work at an upcoming show, but don't know who to ask? Want to schedule a weekly event for the creative community here in Dayton? Here's where you can get the details!

Bad weather = come to City Commission meeting?

Will we be postponing the brick delivery if the thunderstorms keep up (as predicted)?
If so, can we get people to come to the City Commission meeting at 6PM where they'll be voting on our lease? It would be nice to have a showing there...heck, if someone wanted to, they could even register to speak for 3 minutes or less (have to register before start of meeting).
It's at City Hall, 3rd & Ludlow, 2nd floor. If we want, I can get us a conference room to meet in after.
Lisa & Lily, what do you think?

Internet... sort of. Computer... Sort of.

Well, I've got my home-brew system up and running, sort of... I can run Linux just fine, but the XP install is giving me headaches galore, mostly due to some sort of wonky issue with the F6 install of the SATA drivers. Boo! Oh well, at least I've got my open source fix for now. I'll probably just install XP on a virtual machine under Linux and see if that works with all of my hardware and software... but the doesn't really clear up what to do about the 100 GB I've got left on the partition I reserved for XP on my new 10K RPM hard drive. Noodles!

June First Friday Extravaganza

Visitors to this monthly celebration highlighting the city’s artistic, culinary
and entertainment offerings now can get about on the RTA’s Wright Flyer trolley.

No PA lesson this week at Burrito Jam, unless

Matt wants to review what was covered last week or cover new material as I won't be able to make it wednesday... in the meanwhile, here is a link to the operator's manual for our mixing board - it is a pdf file so you can even download it and print it out. There might be a lot in there that doesn't make sense the first time through, but browse it anyway - it'll help when we start working with the board.

Good show at Canal Street Saturday

Just a heads up to check out The Hiders at Canal Street - they are out of Cincy and only play here a few times a year and are great... think early Neil Young only more psychedelic with Linda Rondstadt sharing vocals, not exactly their sound, but about as close as I can come. Check out their website http://www.thehiders.com/music.html to hear some of their music - or trust my tastes and come see them live - if you don't enjoy them, I'll give you your money back or buy you a beer. $5 at the door, a steal!

Please help me let go of this Redwood

I've got all this beautiful redwood that I can't take with me on my travels. I built the Chill Room with it for the first Sideshow. (Remember?) It was also a tree in 1+1=1, the performance that Adam and I birthed at The Excelsior. Then, it was my caging machine in The Power of Perception at The Sideshow 2. The latest incarnation of the Redwood is a sacred platform space in my Front Street studio. Now, I want to leave it with someone or someones who will use it.

Art-in-Motion.. come draw with me!!

05/30/2008 - 18:00
05/30/2008 - 20:00

6:00-8:00pm Town and Country Shopping Center at 300 E Stroop Rd in Kettering, Ohio.

Yeah I know it's last minute but I was volunteering at Art in Motion yesterday and thought it would be cool if I made it more of a get together this time.

We can also discuss Ed and my new idea. We want to start a weekly sketch group for people to participate as they can. Each week I'll post a new idea for people to draw. Drawing can be posted during the week until the next idea come out. Whacha think?
